  • There’s a new 74,000-square-foot ShopRite store in Elmsford, New York.
  • The location features design elements meant to marry the aesthetic of the store with its digital platforms.
  • It also includes ShopRite’s new Fresh to Table department, which offers a variety of types of prepared meals.

ShopRite this week opened a 74,000-square-foot store in Elmsford, New York, debuting a new design for the New Jersey and New York regional chain, which is a banner of Wakefern Food Corp.

ShopRite of Elmsford-Greenburgh in a March 26 release said the store will marry its new aesthetic with other ShopRite branding for an in-store experience that is similarly emulated in its digital offerings, circulars and signage.

The Elmsord-Greenburg store is one of the first ShopRite locations to get Fresh to Table department, which the grocer says offers grab-and-go food options in addition to ingredients to make “one-stop-shop” meals. The Fresh to Table section is divided into three areas: a prep and eat space that offers ready-to-cook meals, a heat and eat area that offers meals that are ready-to-be-served with limited prep and a grab and eat space with ready-to-eat meals. Several other ShopRite locations have recently added the concept, according to a Progressive Grocer report.

As Retail Leader previously reported, more shoppers are purchasing food service items from grocery stores, according to a 2022 report from FMI. A quarter of shoppers said they were purchasing more grocery food service items than they had in 2021, and sales for food service at grocers last year surpassed both dollars and unit sales volume from 2021 and from 2019.

The Fresh to Table concept also features ShopRite’s private label brands Bowl and Basket and Wholesome Pantry. ShopeRite’s digital customers can pre-order meals online for in-store pickup, according to the release. Also available for digital offerings: online orders for in-store pickup or delivery, picked and packed by ShopRite employees.

Similar to other ShopRite stores, the new store includes a meat department with in-store butchers, a bakery, a seafood department, a produce department, organic fruits and vegetables, and a floral department. The store also includes self-checkout machines.

The grocer also highlighted its sustainability initiatives at the store, which include energy-efficient refrigerators and lighting, glass doors on dairy and freezer cases, and LED lighting in the store and parking lot.
